Update to 2.1

Since PwnageTool 2.1 claims to pwn the new iPhone 2.1 Firmware, I tried it today.
Built my pwned firmware, then chose “Update” in iTunes 8 (with Alt-Key). But it didn’t work, there was an error message and the iPhone was in recovery mode.
So I had to choose “Recover” in iTunes 8 – this time it worked and my iPhone was successfully pwned to 2.1. iTunes then offered to restore the last backup, which brought back just the name of my iPhone – all apps, mail accounts, etc. were gone. Of course also all non-AppStore apps were gone too, and I had forgotten to put my Drei_AT custom carrier bundle into the pwned firmware.

Well, at least it builds up some routine to do it all over again…

While I’m on it, I also put a cracked “MobileInstallation” in
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework, allowing the iPhone to be used as Device in XCode even without an Apple iPhone Developer Certificate. Instead, I used the Keychain Certificate Assistant to build my own “iPhone Pwned Developer” Certificate for codesigning.

No Data!

Flew to Germany. Put iPhone into airplane mode. Tried to connect in Germany – didn’t work, because “3″ doesn’t cover DE.
Back in AT, the phone worked, but there was no data connection.

Reset firmware with iTunes 8. Chose to restore from backup – this lead again to non-working data!
Reset firmware again, this time without restore. 3G data connection works again.

iTunes 8 refuses to load a pwned firmware. It even managed to manipulate something in the OS, so iTunes 7.7.1 also cannot use a pwned firmware!

QuickPwn 1.0 to the rescue. My iPhone is jailbroken again, and 3G data works.

Since everybody knows the password for both accounts (root and mobile), I just changed them. Just SSH into the iPhone and type “passwd”…

Custom Carrier Bundle

Since “3 AT” is not an official Apple partner provider, there is no carrier bundle in the firmware for “Drei”. So everytime the iPhone gets connected to the computer, iTunes thinks itself is not up-to-date since it doesn’t know the provider “3 AT” and so asks the user if it may search for a provider update. Of course, it cannot find such update, and so the user faces another modal dialog with the error message.

To get rid of those annoying message popups, one needs to install a custom carrier bundle on the iPhone.

Of course, the iPhone couldn’t be left crippled. So I used Pwnage Tool 2.0.3 to free it.

Watch out: De-activate the “Activate”-checkbox in expert mode, otherwise the phone part of the iPhone won’t work!

Drove to Czech Republic and bought a new, simlock-free iPhone 3G from O2.

Activating works with any SIM card.
